dma check box in system (disk) properties

I was performing some tests on my mother's computer. Looking at the disk properties
("system" icon in the control panel), I noticed that the DMA check box was unchecked.
So turned it on, presuming that if the computer couldn't support DMA, it would be
unchecked when restarting Windows. The only problem is that… Windows doesn't
restart, except in "safe mode". And in that mode, the DMA check box doesn't appear,
so it cannot be turned off. I want to know if there is another way to turn the DMA
off, so that Windows can, once again, work in normal mode. Thanks.
