In XP or 2000 you don't even need to run the Explorer shell...
Simply CTRL ALT DEL- go to your processes and end Explorer.exe;
You'll notice your entire desktop closes and you are left with a empty background...
At that point switch over to your Applications TAB and click new task and browse
to the desired app...
If you want to get the desktop back click New Task and type Explorer.exe..
