Missing Webpage Content

Hello,
I am running Win98se, IE 6.0 with all current upgades and patches from MS. About
3 weeks ago I started missing links and content from all the pages in all the websites
I visit - they were replaced by blamk boxes with an "X" in the upper left corner.
I have not knowingly changed any settings. Am running a 1.2 gig AMD CPU with
512 meg of memory. I have assumed it has something to do with Java or Active X,
but both are enabled in IE/Tools/Options. I am obviously over my head here and need
help in fixing this problem. When I click on these spaces they still take me to
where they are supposed to, I just can't tell where that "supposed to" actually is.
For instance: On PCMags home page, left side, there are links to areas such as Extreme
Tech and Downloads. Box exists, unlabelled, and when clicked takes me there, but
captioning is missing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You very much.
