Question about 'Prevent file corruption problems'

I have a question about my installation of programs among other things. Windows
first off won't install (most) anything (except for windows components or programs)
when it does install a windows component, I just recently installed windows media
encoder, after I tried to save it the program crashed. Word gives me an illegal
operatoin message when I try to save, and WinZip is giving me "bad file header" messages
when I try to open archives. None of this was happening before I used a disk cleaner
to remove "unnecesary" files. I don't have a windows installation disk or I'd format
and reinstall. I just wanted to know if there is a way I can work around any of
