IE5.5 sluggish, dropping highspeed connection

Recently upgraded to highspeed connection (ADSL) from dialup. Before getting it, I installed a NIC (netgear fa311). Just for fun, I changed my computer name, and workgroup name to something more personal, from the OEMComputer that was in it. Do I ever wish I'd left that alone... in hindsight.

On rebooting, which it asked (demanded, actually :) ) it rebooted badly, which is to say, locked up. When I turned off the computer, it went into safe mode, and I rebooted again. This finally allowed it to come up normally, although seems to take longer. I've heard that's because of the NIC. Anyways, without the highspeed connection yet, I dialed up with the modem to make sure I hadn't messed that up, but I noticed the that my IE was a little sluggish. Sometimes, when clicking on a link, it would sit for about 30 seconds or more before proceeding to the page. Now that the highspeed is hooked up, I've been having troubles with it dropping the connection from the server. This can run anywhere from a 2 minute to my record 2 hour connection. That would be the PPPoE client that does this. The only way to reconnect is to reboot. The line's been checked, the adsl modem has been reset, so I don't think it's a hardware or line problem. It smells like a software problem, and I've triple checked the client's settings, worked with the ISP tech support, run sfc (no files bad) and I'm scratching my head. Anyways, sorry for the novel, but I thought I'd share my troubleshooting. My main question is: I think I've corrupted a file or somesuch. Where can I look next for the trouble? Carol posted a response to someone who was having sluggish IE troubles, and I will try running the scanreg /opt and scanreg /fix next. I had previously run Norton's registry optimizer, but that hasn't had any affect. Norton, which usually finds windows errors, hasn't found any lately. Anybody have some ideas? You people are always great at coming up with things I wouldn't think of... thanks in advance, Rob
