I will recheck the physical installation, but I've been putting that off as the ISP
keeps insisting it's line noise or some such. I did reinstall the NIC's software,
but it didn't seem to make any difference. The only reason I suspected the name change
was the crash after changing those items. I suspected a bad registry change, as when
it booted up, it went into safe mode. But rebooting again put it back to normal.
I checked in the registry for the old entries, and they were gone, with the exception
of one in software that I haven't used since adding a harddisk (xxcopy). It just
lists the key "server_1" as "OEMCOMPUTER", under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software\Pixelab\XXCOPY
but whether that refers to my workgroup name or computer name... they were both the
same before the change. I'll look at everything suspect at this point. :) Will be
making a few points under the other post as well. No, I didn't use a previous backup
of the registry... Didn't think of it.
