Check on BOTH systems that you REALLY use the right SUBNET MASK !!!
I recently set up a network (desktop <-> switch <-> laptop) and ran into problems.
Both computer would only see themselves.
I checked the assigned IP addresses a dozen of times.
Only days later I found that I mistyped the SUBNET MASK on the laptop - instead of
255.255.255.0, it was 255.255.0.0.
Changed that and it worked.
