no sound in Win Media Player

I put this in SEARCH (here) and came up with many posts about it, but they seemed
to be more WIN 2000 and up, and no clear (or any) answers.
I have WMP9 installed, and it works fine, except there's no sound. When I play online
clips I usually see them but no sound. Everything I can find is turned up.
When I try playing CDs from the D drive, (or audio files I have saved) error boxes
come up saying there is no sound card, or another program is using it.
I've tried older versions of WMP, and the same thing.
Someone suggested I run tests for the directX and the sound test failed. But I
never learned what to do to fix it. And I have sound, everything else (sound) works,
and other player programs do. Just not with WMP.
I have Real Player, which plays audio files but not the CDs. It says it has to
have an update or plugin, and will contact their homepage to get it. Then says what
I need isn't available.
I also have used WinAmp, which works with my sound files AND CDs, but isn't an
option for clicking on websites (usually only RealAudio, WMP or one of them is).
This started because I was given a link to webcasts of news from around the world.
It said Real Audio player or WMP was required. At the time I was using WinAmp (which
seemed to work for my audio files and CDs).
Right now Real Audio plays the sound files, and the "generic" (I think it came
with WIN) CD PLAYER (which is in ENTERTAINMENT) plays the CDs.
I've tried taking out and changing and changing the settings (default) to, and
installing older models.
I have WIN 98 SE (hp Brio). I'm sure I had both WMP and Real Player in at one time.
In the 2 years I've had this computer I've reinstalled WIN 98 SE two different times.
What I'd like is a player that I can use for everything. Audio files, CDs and webcasts/
videos I might find online to click on and open.
I like the new WMP, how you can open it to full screen, and the visuals.
But, if I could get Real Player to work for everything (or anything else for
that matter) I could use that.
Also, I'd like to find out why WMP (any version of it) says there's an error with
the sound. No soundcard or another program is using it.
I've tried taking everything out BUT the WMP and it still says this. Only the
little generic WIN CD PLAYER was in. I don't want to take that out, because it's
sometimes the only program that I can play CDs with. And I might have to reinstall
WIN again to get it back.
I also have a cd burner (hp) and software that came with that (RECORD NOW) and
NERO (I downloaded but haven't figure out, so don't use). And CDex I've been using
to record cassette tapes onto the computer and then making CDs from them.
How do I find out what, if anything is clashing, or using whatever WMP is supposed
to use?
