Outlook Express 6 Slow to Load

I just did a complete overhaul on my computer (Windows 98 platform), to speed everything
up and clear off the junk. I was happy to be able to use OE again (after having to
convert to regular Outlook a few years ago when OE got extremely slow). It was cranking
along fine this morning, when all that was on my computer aafter the overhaul was
the internet. Then as I got everything reinstalled, it slowed up again.
Those IT experts out there: are there any programs with which OE is incompatible?
I'm running OE 6.
When I clicked the icon to open the program, it took 40 seconds for the introductory
screen to pop up. It took 1 minute 50 seconds for the program itself to open. And
it took 2 minutes 10 seconds for the Inbox to be visible. Then on top of that, when
I click Reply, it took 55 seconds for the screen to open that allows me to write.
Here's what I've got on my computer (which is only about 1/8 full):
Preinstalled Games/Accessories, CD writer, etc
Adobe Photoshop
Adobe PageMaker
Adobe Acrobat
Zone Alarm (Lavasoft)
Microsoft Front Page
Microsoft Office 2000 Professional Edition (package)
Microsoft Works
I *uninstalled* McAfee, because I was told it can be incompatible, and I don't like
their customer service
Norton System Works
Symantec Live Update (part of Norton)
Webshots
Windows Media Player
WinZip
Ad Aware (Zone Labs)
I had AIM and MSN Messenger installed, but that's when I noticed OE6 being stupid,
so I uninstalled them, too.
No luck. Still slow.
Any ideas?
Thank you.
