Hi,

Thanks for the message. Anyway, i solved it.  I suspected some registry error as 
i had installed a software prior to this incident.  

All that anybody, with similar problem due to software installation, has to do is,
1. Switch on the computer.
2. Press F8
3. Choose safe mode with command prompt only.
4. On prompt type, "scanreg/restore".
5. Restart the system.

This apparently restores the normal registry of the day prior to creation of error 
due to the errant software.  Voila, everything is back to normal.  But remember, 
you can do this only within four days after the error has occurred as per the windows 
help.
