Thanks for your answers.

I will give this "Disk Doctor" a try and also try to tell NDD that there was no major 
catastrophe on my disks.

Otherwise, my Windows 98 has gone and is now replaced by XP, which is much more stable 
(uptime of weeks are now possible), so the problem has mostly solved itself. But 
for my temporary data disk, is use still the FAT32 file system. In fact, I have gone 
also one step back and use now FAT16 for the boot drive. I also upgraded to a RAID1 
system (for system, programs and important data), to reach more protection against 
hardware failures.

btw. The name "Disc" is used for optical medias and "Disk" for magnetical medias.

So have a nice time and a running computer.
