My CD-Rom Drives Are Suddenly Missing

My CD-Rom drives are suddenly missing. My system is a Compaq Presario 5003US running WinMe; PIII/933mhz, 256mb Ram. Previously my OS was Win989SE with all updates, and roughly two weeks ago they disappeared but I was able to access them in DOS and upgrade the OS to ME. This fixed the problem temporarily. Then earlier this week it happened again. They're not showing up in Windows Explorer, nor Device Manager in "Normal" mode; however, in Safe Mode they show up in Device Manager. I've tried to restart my system with the Win98SE Start Disk in and possibly access them in DOS...but to no avail. Another item of note, my CD-Rom drive does not power-up, nor can I open the tray door without a paperclip. So I may possibly have a bad drive, but my CD-RW drive powers up as well as opens the tray door normally. This happened in the first episode also. I look forward to any suggestions offered. Peace, James
