I have pretty much the same problem, I have a medium sized network with about 6 XP
machines and like 11 Win98se machines, a few XP Machines will connect quickly to
other XP/Win98se machines, while on the other hand, a few windows 98 computers get
an error when I try to connect to an XP machine something about "not accesible".
I Installed TPX/SPX protocols on the XP and 98 computers and it didn't help at all,
but then I installed NetBeui on the Win98 OS and after rebooting it could connect
to the XP computers. Seems like each one has a mind of it's own though. But I think
the NetBeui on Windows 98 solved my problem to access XP computers(some of them atleast).
Anyways the bigger problem I'm having is that when I try to connect to Win98 from
Win XP it takes forever to copy a simple file, it even takes awhile before the folders
show up and the file begins to copy. I read somewhere in this forum that you have
to give each computer running on Win98 a network password instead of leaving it blank,
due to Windows XP's high security settings and it doesn't allow blank passwords.
I haven't tried that yet but I hope it works, and if anyone else has had the same
problem please let me know if you find a solution for this? It's driving me crazy,
BTW if I made any weird typos don't worry I'm just pretty darn tired and half asleep
;) Oh yeah, by the way, all computers are sharing folders, they show up on the network
but they're all wacky, 2 win98 wouldn't connect to an XP comp Until I installed NetBeui
on the 2 Windows 98 stations, then I reboot and they could access XP, but with XP
accessing windows 98 it's real sluggish, but only on some computers :(
Sorry for the long message but I hope this helps some of u that had this problem
and hope someone with more knowledge helps me hehe, I saw something about editing
registry keys on the Microsoft Support page but not sure if that's the problem I'm
having so I'd rather not mess with it
thx
