Hi Mable.
Two possible ways to achieve this.
You need a Win98 boot floppy and/or the Win98 CD to get the Win.com file back on
the system.
1. If you can access another PC using Win98, then you can Copy the Win.com file from
that PC.
Copy the Win.com file from C:\Windows << Folder, on a good PC, to your Win98
boot floppy and then, insert the Win98 boot floppy into the Faulty PC's Floppy drive.
Turn on the Faulty PC with the Floppy disk inserted.
When the 3 option menu appears, select Option 2 Without CD support, press
Enter and let it finish loading the Floppy disk.
Note: The spaces between the following.....
Copy and win.com, win.com and C:\
At the A:\> prompt type in.....
Copy win.com C:\Windows press Enter.
The file should now be back in Windows and you will be back to the A:\> prompt.
Remove the Floppy disk and press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart the PC, hopefully you will
now be able to boot into Windows once again.
2. If you cannot access another PC, then you will have to extract the Win.com file
from the Windows98 CD. It is called Win.cnf in the CD Cab files and needs to be changed
to win.com, which I have given instructions below on how to do it.
You will need the Win98 Boot Floppy and the Win98 CD for this.
Insert the Win98 boot Floppy into the Faulty PC's Floppy drive.
Turn on the Faulty PC and let the Floppy disk load up.
When the 3 option menu appears, select Option 1 With CD support, press Enter
and let it finish loading the Floppy disk.
Make a note of the CD-Rom drive letter it installs. This can be seen, once the Floppy
disk has finished loading completely and you will see it in the text just above the
A:\> prompt.
It will change from your normal drive letter to one letter higher, so if your CD-Rom
is normally D:\ then it will become E:\ until you restart the PC again and will then
return to the normal CD drive letter again.
You should now be at the A:\> prompt.
Now insert the Win98 CD into the CD Drive and wait till it stops shuffling.
I have substituted the CD-Rom drive letter in the Command below with a Question mark,
because I dont know your PC Specs, so you will have to insert the CD-Rom Drive letter
with the one you took note of in the above process, to replace the Question mark.
Note: The spaces between the following.......
extract and ?, cab and win.cnf, cnf and /l << That is an L, and finally /l and C:\
At the A:\> prompt type in........
extract ?:\Win98\Win98_25.cab win.cnf /l C:\Windows press Enter and wait
till the file is extracted, it will then go back to the A:\>prompt again.
Now you have to rename the file to the correct name.
At the A:\> prompt type in.......
C: press Enter.
Note: The spaces between the following.
ren and C:, Win.cnf and Win.com
At the C:\> prompt type in.......
ren C:\windows\Win.cnf Win.com press Enter.
You should now be back at the C:\> prompt.
Type in A: press Enter.
Remove the Floppy disk and CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart the PC.
Hopefully your PC will boot up again.
You may want to Print this of for reference.
I hope you understand all this, because I am lost, hehe.
