Well, first I tried the suggestion of replacing the shell=explorer.exe in system.ini
with shell=winfile.ini. I was surprised when that worked- well partially. Instead
of just having the wallpaper, a program came up (winfile, i assume) that allowed
me to browse [the Windows way, as opposed to DOS] through my hard drive. I was able
to replace the explorer.exe file from the Win98SE cd by opening a program called
SFC. The details were listed above i think. Explorer did work, but many programs
would not run...
In any case, I still had these other problems so I followed the suggestion of another
helpsite to just reinstall Windows by simply setting the BIOS to boot from the CD
and then running the Windows setup. So far all is good, if not better. Nothing got
erased etc. I did have to reinstall the drivers for some devices. In order to get
my monitor to display in 800x600, I had to reinstall my display drivers for my video
card. I thought reinstalling Windows was supposed to be a last resort, but to me
it did not seem bad at all- it seems to have cured some other problems that have
accumulated over time too.
