Question about 'Things that slow down system bootup'

I have just completed a new computer from scratch, using w98se. My question is where to look to see why during boot it hangs on the windows logo screen for way too long before continuing? Can anyone shed some light. Not a crisis just annoying. Thankyou for any help. John
