even though i'm only 16, dont take what i say with a pinch of salt.
now. older (AT form factor) motherboards have to be switched off when Windows shuts
down. this effectively turns all power to the motherboard OFF.
newer (ATX form factor) motherboards have what is called "Soft-Power off". this is
where the machines motherboard still has power going to it when it looks as though
it is off. so technically, your PC is still on if you have an ATX pc. this enables
advantages such as Wake On LAN. (i use this at home) and Wake On RING (when someone
phones you). and of course, it enables you to turn off the pc without touching the
power switch.
so there is NO WAY of making an AT pc shut down on its own. some ATX pcs don't either,
as you need ACPI or APM BIOS to use the soft-off feature.
