Boy, this thread goes on for YEARS! Ok, me too. Win98SE started BSOD's with VxD
errors and bad restarts, then deteriorated into Win Prot Err. After exhausing Norton,
Rescue, etc. reinstalled Win98SE and STILL the WPE's --reinstalled again --and again
--and again! Would start in SafeMode, but no bananas running all the standard "fixes".
Then I looked in Start/Settings/ControlPanel/System/DeviceManager and expanded each
catagory to see that there were two, three, four, five duplicated listings for installed
devices of which there should only be one. Removed all the duplicates, triplicates,
quadruplicates and quintuplets, the video card and USB scanner and Restarted --Windows
loaded the s/w for the video card, then the USB scanner and HEAVEN! No more WPE's
for two weeks now....... Hope you have the same luck!
I did look at the M$ URL suggested, but they are just as confused as I was and expect
one to be able to find information NOT available even in SafeMode......
