Win 98 won't load; ''himem.sys missing''

My computer had been running well until a few days ago... after starting it up, in
place of the startup options, e.g., Normal, Safe Mode, etc, I got an "Invalid
System disk" error, even tho there were no discs in either the floppy or CD-ROM drives.
I rebooted & held
down the Delete key to bring up Help, which said if I
got an "Invalid System Disk" error I should restart my computer using the Win 98
Startup Disk, select option 2 (run disk with CD-ROM support) on the Startup
menu, then at the A:\ prompt type SYS X: where X is the Host or Startup drive. Since
I wasn't loading compression software, Help said the drive would be C. I did so,
and a "System transferred" message appeared. I rebootedand things seemed to be loading
OK until I got this message: "The file himem.sys is either missing or corrupted."
How do I find it, and what do I do?
Thanks!
Pete
