Hi Helen, you've probably got most of those updates installed right now, the trouble
with Windows 98 (which I haven't used for a while actually - I'm on XP) is that the
average home user doesn't need a lot of the critical updates (network updates etc.)The
last time I installed 98 I installed all the updates I already had here (from computer
magazine CD's) - IE6, Media Player 9, DirectX9 etc. then I went to Windows Update
and let it scan for what I needed, took a note of those updates, let Windows Update
install them then I went straight to the Corporate site and selected the same updates
and downloaded them to my hard drive then burnt them to CD for future use. Obviously,
you probably don't feel like formatting and reinstalling 98 just to find out which
ones you need :) Mind you, if you have cable or ADSL internet then you could probably
just download the lot and save them, I don't think it would hurt if you install updates
you don't really need... in fact, Windows may flash up a message saying those updates
are not needed... I'm not sure. If you installed all your updates from Windows
Update the other thing you can do is go there - that's the "normal" Windows Update
- and select the option for "Show Installation History" which will give you a list
of all the updates you've installed - but it will only show you the ones you've installed
from Windows Update, if you've installed any updates from computer mag CD's etc.
(as I've mentioned above) it won't show those... Keep an eye out though... as I
said in my post above, I"ve heard MS are thinking about releasing all of the updates
for 98 on a CD soon... mainly for the benefit of dialup users who don't want to spend
hours downloading updates again after formatting and reinstalling. Carl
