video card driver

I had to replace my hard drive after it malfunctioned and refused to boot windows
(98se) properly, so I'm starting from scratch with only 16 colors and no other choices
available, also my screen resolution is limited to 640x480, since the adjustment
in desktop properties/settings is frozen.
I've been told that I need to install video drivers for my video card, that this
would solve the problem, but I have no idea how to locate the video card installed
in my computer (in other words, where is it listed?,) and I have absolutely no idea
how to pick the driver I need from the multitude of drivers available for free on
the web. My computer is an HP Vectra (circa '98,) and the drivers I need are still
located, I'm sure, on my old hard drive which I'm now using as a slave. Perhaps I
could dig it out and copy it over to my new H.D., but I don't know if it would make
more sense to download a fresh one of the web.
I've been to HP and looked at their drivers. I've googled 'HP Vectra video card drivers'
etc. etc. and all the stuff I'm finding seems pretty uncertain and irrelevant, not
to mention the blind links to registrations sights which I'd prefer to avoid.
Where do I start?
Thanks.
