Computer doesn't respond in normal or safemode

When I start my computer in normal mode, it almost starts like normal. The background
appears and the little mouse has the wait symbol. Then the start bar on the bottom
of the computer flashes for an instant, and then the computer stops responding. The
background is still viewable, but upon pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL, nothing shows up. Sometimes
when I start the computer, I get a Kernel32 has performed an illegal operation. I
try to get the details but the computer is frozen. Upon starting in Safe-Mode, I
get the same thing. The only way I can access files on my computer is through MS-DOS.
I am including the following information, just wondering if it is contributing to
the problems:
- I have a laptop (I don't know if this changes things)
- Sometimes when I shut down my computer, it won't shut down all the way. The logo
just stays. I usually just shut it off.
- When I start it up (before this), I would have something come up in like MS-Dos
mode that would say "too many parameters"
- Sometimes the "home" address on my internet explorer would change
- When I go to the setup screen for my computer, it says I only have 640 KB of memory
Right now, that's all I can think of. I don't know what's going on, but any advice
is appreciated! Thanks
