After the computer boots up (in Safe Mode), right-mouse-click on the My Computer
icon, choose "Properties" in drop-down menu. The Systems Properties dialog box should
appear.
Left-mouse-click on the "Device Manager" tab. A list of hardware devices appear
in this list; check to see if there are any items here that either have a question
mark or exclamation mark next to it.
If so, expand out the item by clicking on the [+] symbol. You can either try changing
the settings for the offending device, or remove it entirely. Reboot the computer.
Windows' Plug n Play should detect the device (unless it's very old or defective)
and either load a driver or ask you to locate a driver for it. (I usually find it
easier to locate the original driver in the C:\windows\system folder than to dig
out the floppy or CD-ROM.)
There's no simple or completely identical fix for the same problems, but I hope this
bit of info leads you in the right direction.
