Happy New Year!!!
So, step-by-step confirmation.
1. Load DoubleSpace driver -- Y
2. Process the system registry -- Y
3. Create a startup log file (bootlog.txt) -- Y
4. DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS.000\HIMEM.SYS -- Y
5. DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS.000\DBLBUFF.SYS -- Y
6. DEVICEHIGH=C:\WINDOWS.000\IFSHLP.SYS -- Y
7. Load the windows graphical user interface -- Y
After typing yes to this, it goes to Microsoft Scandisk. I exit.
8. Load all Windows drivers -- Y
After about 15 seconds...
9. vnetsup.vxd -- Y
10. ndis.vxd -- Y
11. ndis2sup.vxd -- Y
12. JAVASUP.VXD -- Y
13. C:\WINDOWS.000\SYSTEM\vrtwd.386 -- Y
14. C:\WINDOWS.000\SYSTEM\vfixd.vxd -- Y
15. vnetbios.vxd -- Y
16. vredir.vxd -- Y
17. dfs.vxd -- Y
18. ndiswan.vxd -- Y
19. C:\PROGRA~1\SYMANTEC\SYMEVNT.386 -- Y

After a minute of waiting, my desktop loads (without icons) and so does the mouse,
the windows loading music comes on, the start bar flashes for the quickest second,
and I am back to my usual predicament. But maybe this new information will help?
