I tried www.microsoft.com - support and found this:
SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to start Links LS 1998 edition, you may receive the following error
message:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem
persists, contact the program vendor.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if an incompatible microprocessor is installed in your computer.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, download and install the Version 1.35 Update for Links LS
98 (Upd135.exe) from the Microsoft Download Center.
The following file is available for download from the Microsoft Download Center:
Upd135.exe
Release Date: Jun-22-1999

Microsoft scanned this file for viruses. Microsoft used the most current virus-detection
software that was available on the date that the file was posted. The file is stored

STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Links LS 1998 Edition.
MORE INFORMATION
The Upd135.exe file updates your version of Links LS 98 to version 1.35.
