Dear Ian,
Here's a cheap solution to make it much more difficult for worms to enter your computer:
¬Get a mail client that does not run script automatically.
Mozilla E-mail is a good example and it's free.
Outlook Express and Outlook run all scripts automatically.
There may be patches for them, but I don't know how secure they are. Remember that
a preview of a document might run the scripts inside.
Norton Antivirus 2003/4 provides email scanning regardless of the Mail Client you
are using and can therefore be recommended.
