Having tried most of the helpful suggestions in this thread, my WinXP Pro and Win98
machines still didn't seem completely happy doing file transfers. Whenever I was
using Windows Explorer (on the XP side) to initiate a file transfer (Copy, Paste,
whatever), there would be almost a 1 minute lag before the operation even started!
One of the Microsoft queries mentioned late in this forum recommended setting up
a Mapped Network Drive (e.g. S:\ on the XP machine points indirectly to \\server\files
folder on the 98 machine), instead of trying to navigate directly through Network
Places.
Once I did this, I found file operations start immediately (and the throughput seems
faster), with no delay whatsoever. Before using this method, none of the network
changes had really helped (not NetBIOS, NetBEUI, TCP/IP settings, registry hacks,
NIC settings, etc.).
So, now I let drive letter S (on my XP machine) map to a desired folder on the Win98
side, with a shortcut on my Desktop. I open that shortcut, and bingo, things go
smoothly. Try it and see if that helps.
Thanks to all who came before for their really well-thought-out hints! Only took
me, um, 4 days to get anywhere with this obnoxious problem.
Note: I never updated to Windows' Service Pack 1 for XP Pro, which might also have
helped.
