I just went through this frustrating exercise as well. I have a name-brand system
which I reformatted and loaded with a fresh copy of Windows, but not from the 'system
restore' discs. I tried reloading the driver for the video monitor several times,
using the 'search for' option with both of the original system discs. The search
function wasn't able to find the driver files until I specified the full path to
the driver files (ie, E:\Win98\Windows\Inf ) on the disc that had them on it. Once
I provided the complete path to the driver files, Windows was finally able to find
them. I also had to tell it where to look for some additional files it wanted under
the ...\Cab directory (also on the original system discs). After these shenanigans,
things were back to the usual choice of several color options and screen resolutions.
Hope this helps someone - I lost about a day wrangling with this critter!
