I just managed to fix this nasty problem in a way not exactly as described elsewhere,
so just in case it helps anyone here's the short version (it took me a week):
I upgraded from win95 to win98. The first time I used Win98 it was in 16 colours,
with no explanation. If I set the colours back to 'high colour 16 bit', the system
reset itself but came back up still in 16 colours.
When I looked at 'settings' under 'display' it told me I had a Trident 3D video
driver installed. When I let windows search for a driver it installed 'Standard VGA
graphics adapter', which was even worse, as I now only had the option of 2 colours
or 16 colours. I went back to 'display', clicked 'advanced', 'change' and then 'display
a list of drivers in a specific location'. I re-selected the original driver from
the list, the Trident 3d one.
What followed baffled me, but it worked so I don't care! Windows tried to install
each component of the driver, but couldn't find any of them. Luckily at each stage
there was an option to 'skip this file'. So, esentially, I didn't install anything.
Windows however seemed happy to give me all the colours back. It now thinks it has
a trident driver, even though it surely can't have?
All too much for me, I'm just glad it's back to normal. Thanks a lot to everyone
else!
