I had teh exact same problem except I couldn't even ping my win98 desktop from my
winxp laptop. I could see the desktop icon in My Network Places in winxp, but could
not either open it nor ping desktop.
I could ping laptop from desktop, but not see laptop icon in Network folder in desktop
(win98). Since i was able to ping the xp (laptop), here's how i accessed files on
xp:
Start -> Run: \\ipaddress of xp
This opened up a window showing all the shared folders on the laptop(xp). File transfers
were then possible, but only from the desktop.
Then 3 days later, my desktop caught some virus and got very sick. It's registry
was wiped out along with the VFAT. So I had to re-format the C: drive and re-install
the OS.
NB: Just deleting the windows folder and re-installing the OS gave the same network
problems. After the formatted install, I forgot to enable file sharing on desktop.
(Did installation 2 days ago). Today I wanted to share a file on my desktop with
my laptop, so I went to desktop and opened the network folder, and to my amazement,
I could see the laptop icon! This was good! I then remembered that since the workgroup
are still the same, this is ok. I then enabled file sharing on the desktop, and this
time both showed up on desktop. I checked on laptop, and both were showing here too!
Ping worked from both sides this time. Icons were also showing on both computers
- and finally, I was now able to access my files from both the computers - win98
and winXP.
