Question about 'Change a file association on the fly'

I have a question about Change
a file association on the fly:
I am running windows 98 and my .bmp files were associated with an adobe program,
something for photo editing, and that program was deleted some time back. now, it
is still associated with that program. I changed the "open with" command to paint
(when holding shift and right clicking on the file) so it opens with paint.
however, it is still associated with the deleted program.
when you go to view-folder options-file types the .bmp file type is not on the list
of registered file types. when i try to add it i cannot because it tells me that
the .bmp file type is still associated with the deleted adobe program. does anyone
know how i could destroy that association and associate it with paint? i have another
program that i use that embeds .bmp's into some files for printing, but it will not
work since the .bmp is associated with that adobe program, it needs to be associated
with paint.
thanks
Dale
