I have this error too, though much less now that I have 9.0. What struck me is that you said you had a smartlink modem, which I have too. I wonder if the two together somehow conflict with Windows. I'll suggest this, get 9.0. With 7.0 I got it every few days, 8.0 was the worst, 3 or 4 times a day, 9.0 does it every few weeks or so, which I can live with since I am using their product free.
