MATCLI. W98SE Program slowdown fixed.

I've never had MATCLI in the taskbar (at least, not permanently) although it would
pop up for some 10 odd seconds during Windows start-up. This started loading after
installing Verizon DSL, and (ever conscious for anomalies) had determined it was
part of their package, and what it ostensibly was supposed to do (as described in
previous posts).
I've alway had uneven connect speeds, sometimes a very hard time connecting at all,
and (when running into this again last night) started to uninstall the Verizon programs
... leaving the iVasion poET adapter driver for last ... just to see what would happen.
Several observations:
1). MATCLI stopped loading during startup. Slightly faster boot time as a result
of this.
2). Still able to make DSL connections (with about the same results as before ...
no-go to mildly crappy).
3). Norton System Doctor still showing a lengthy period of 100% CPU utilization after
the computer seemingly has finished booting (approximately 1 minute in duration,
and while about 20 MB of physical memory is being allocated for something).
4). An unexpected side benefit of 'fixing' two programs that had begun to behave
badly.
I use both Irfanview and IDM (Internet Download Manager). Several months ago (and
several days after installing a newer version) Irfanview started to run like molasses
on Pluto - it would eventually load files, but CPU utilization went to 100%, and
getting a file manager screen could take up to two minutes. Approximately the same
thing happened after upgrading IDM.
It may be coincidence (in which case its a rather remarkable one) but uninstalling
the two Verizon support programs has cleared this up, and both programs run fine
again.
For the record, I'm still running Win98SE (v4.10.2222) with IE v6 browser using all
available patches, keep up-to-date with Norton Antivirus, and regularly run both
Spybot and Ad-Aware in an attempt to keep malevolent byte beasties at bay.
I was wondering if anyone else had noticed otherwise unexplained program slowdowns
'fixed' by uninstalling the Verizon support programs?
