You don't need a hub to connect just 2 computers. Just a crossover cable - I'm just
wondering if that's what your problem was. Are you sure you had a crossover cable
not just a normal one?
On the other hand, hubs, switches and routers are very cheap nowadays (use a switch
or a router - depending on whether you have a broadband internet connection too -
router if connection, switch - better than a hub, specially if you later add one
or more machines to the network - if not), and give you lots more flexibility - specially
to add more machines later (eg, laptop(s)).
