Thanks to this old thread I sorted my machine.
The computer went crazy and when I tried the last good startup with scanreg restore 
it didn't work. I then thought 'dodgy RAM' and ran a mem check program which showed 
all memory errors for every test. Took out a RAM card and it worked perfectly on 
64Mb
Problem solved.
Testing out showed the removed 64Mb was faulty.
