It sounds like your file associations are completely messed up. Thats basically
what is in the view/folder options/file types part of explorer where you set what
program opens certain types of files.
You could fix them all manually ... a registry restore should fix it as well.
The control panel part concerns me however because I simply did not think you could
change the association for those.
The registry restore should be treated as a last resort .. and windows only keeps
a limited number of copies .. so unless you decide you want to do the restore, I
would leave the computer off unless someone posts another fix.
To do the registry restore you need be in dos mode (f8 at system start, command prompt
option) and type scanreg /restore
