First of all, thanks to you all, this forum is very useful, although bit mixed up sometimes. What worked for me extremely well and without any further problems was a combination of a few things first I followed the link http://www.homenethelp.com/web/howto/net-update.asp posted by someone I can't recall sorry. By checking this I realized a few configuration errors. I then went looking at my antivirus protection for both computer and it turned out that the win98 PC antivirus had also a firewall I wasn't aware of. I turned both firewalls down, and got instant, transparent, problem free networking. I hope this helps. btw I have redundant firewalls through my 2wire router ... so the individual firewalls are not an issue.
