Windows Firewall on XP machine is not an issue. Make sure all computers belong to
the same Workgroup (ie Workgroup). Check if your getting an IP address (ie.192.168.1.100
on both machines (check to make sure router is serving IP addresses ok)). Do this
on 98 machines by typing winipcfg (and ipconfig on XP). In winipcfg window make sure
the drop down menu does not say PPP click on drop down menu and select your nic card.
If you cannot see your nic card make sure you can see it in Device Manager. Then
try removing the TCP/IP Protocol and TCP/IP adapter from network neighbourhood, restart
machine then re-add TCP/IP protocol connect via DHCP, NETBEUI Protocol will not stop
network from working this allows you to see your own machine and others in the workgroup
this is ok to be installed. You should now see a valid IP like the one above. I
have successfully networked XP to WIN98SE with ADSL Router serving DHCP leases to
both machines and connecting to the web.
