I have a similar setup. I get stutters in the Windows start sound. I have always
had it with this motherboard which has VIA onboard sound chips. The onboard sound
also had hitches--hesitations--when playing MPEG clips. It was too much for the
CPU to handle all by itself. I had hitches in the onboard VIA video.
The hitches in the video went away when I added a graphics card so the CPU doesn't
have to do the work of the GPU.
I've had fewer problems with the sound. I've gone thru 2 sound cards and now I have
a Soundblaster 16 like you because it is compatible with my DOS games and nothing
else is. My brother-in-law told me of someone's freeware workaround module but neither
of us could get it to work and he has a Soundblaster--I don't know which module.
I got more of the problems out when I found the onboard sound was still on in the
BIOS. I thought I had turned it off. I turned it off and went to Start > Settings
> Control Panel > Multimedia > Devices and Start > Settings > Control Panel
> System >Device Manager and deleted any references to VIA's sound system.
So now I only get the stutters on Windows start.
Of course, the SB16 is obsolescent. It is not designed to handle the situation of
2 competing sounds coming in at the same time. Sometimes I get the "... device is
already in use ..." popup which brought back memories of Win3.1.
I got the SB16 for $15 at a local store. They have a modern Soundblaster card for
$28. I'm about to rebuild my system so I will try that. As long as I can play my
old DOS games.
