Always run scan disk before defrag. You need to close out running programs first,
or those will interfere. Even having a screensaver
'selected' interferes with maintenance.

First, download Windows ME's defrag tool and replace your original. It's about 10x
faster than 98's:
Surecool - ME Defrag

Clear out temp files first: In Internet Options - General tab - delete temporary
internet files and choose 'delete all Offline content'. Clear History. In Settings,
set the size of the TIF folder between 5-10 MB. Empty the contents of the C:\Windows\temp
folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. Note: some may be in use until you reboot.

You can also clear out more junk files by using Find - Files or folders to search
for several file extensions at a time, if you seperate with a semi-colon and no space.
ex: *.tmp;*.chk. Any of these can go. Just copy/paste these in there, or be sure
to type them correctly, so you don't bring up the wrong files.

*.CHK;*.Gid;*.OLD;*.prv;*.tmp;*.fts;*.ftg;*.diz;*.dir
*.grp;*.$$$;*.bak;chklist;*.ftg;*mscreate.dir

Delete this folder - C:\Windows\Applog. It's not needed and is related to Taskmon's
useless purpose. It'll be re-created at bootup, but it'll be empty. Empty Recycle
bin.

Uncheck Taskmon in 'msconfig' under startup tab: Start - Run - type: MSCONFIG. Hit
Apply. Close all tray applications, then hit Ctl_Alt_Del and End Task on everything
but Explorer and Systray. Disable your screensaver by temporarily setting to "None."
Run scandisk in "Standard" mode then defrag,. First in the defrag settings, uncheck
"rearrange program files so my programs start faster". Reboot when finished.

If you have MS Office program installed, follow M$ instructions on how to kill the
FindFast Indexer, and don't re-enable it. It's a serious resource hog:
