Well, it depends on how inexperienced you mean. There's more involved, than some
people think. Of course, you'd need a way to reinstall Windows 98. You need download
Win 98 drivers for your hardware, in advance, that Windows doesn't install drivers
for. Locate and write down your Product Code, so you have that on hand. You'll need
to upgrade IE to a newer version, once Windows has been reinstalled.
I have no idea, what would prevent those IM programs from being installed. You may
be able get it running better just by doing some basics first, then deal with installing
those programs. Uninstall programs that you don't want or need. Run the IE repair
tool, and/or upgrade IE, if it's older than version 5.5. Has a spyware scan ever
been done?
