I would recommend installing newer "generic" conextant modem device drivers if
you have not already tried it. Conexant
chipset modem drivers. Problem is sorting out exactly what chip set you have
and which generic drivers you need for your modem.
If that does not work better, maybe move your system to somewhere else like a
friends who lives closer to the local phone switching station and try it. There could
be a problem with your phone line like excessive noise, bad wire connections in your
house, an alarm system, or just too far from the phone switching station. This would
tell you if it is a house wiring problem or a problem with the modem/drivers.
The conextant chip sets work OK if you have "clean" phone lines and are not too
far from the phone switching station. But they do poorly if you have any line noise
or live far from the phone company switching station (has nothing to do with which
ISP the phone company connects you to).
Personally, I would get rid of the Conextant modem and use a Lucent/Agere chipset
modem like the cheap
Agere chipset modem. They have much better device drivers that come with it.
