Go here to download the Vopt 6.2 defragger:
http://www.vopt.com/archive.htm
It's a fully functional 30-day program, but it's easy to use and probably the quickest
one available. If your old computer has, say, a 10 gig hard drive, expect it to
do the job in less than half-an-hour, maybe even 15 minutes, even if there's quite
a mess to straighten out. This is all you have to do with it:
1. Install and then run it.
2. Under Tools, select Close Applications. It will shut down all unneeded running
programs; however, there still may be a stubborn one or two, i.e. ZoneAlarm firewall,
you'll have to shut down manually. Double-check with control-alt-delete afterwards
to make sure that the only programs running are Explorer and Vopt.
3. Under Tools again, click Erase Free Space.
4. Once free space has been erased of minute trash remnants, click File, then Defragment.
If there's only the A and C drives on your computer, select the C drive to Defragment.
5. Watch it go to work on its view screen as you wait, and then before you know it,
it's done.
There are other features to play with on the Vopt defragger, but unless you intend
to buy the program after the 30 day trial, I wouldn't mess around with them much.
For now, all you need is something that'll just defrag your drive in the easiest
and quickest manner possible.
The home page of Vopt lists a newer version, VoptXP,but I find the older one, version
6.2, still does a better job for 98.
