|Click Start, Run and enter MSCONFIG
|Go to the Startup tab.
|You can disable items there, until you find the cause of the problem.

To clarify trey's point:
Disable items **that you don't need**.
There are some things that must not be disabled. See below.
He might have even taken it 1 step farther:
Disable everything EXCEPT what you **absolutely need** running at startup:
Explorer, Systray, Scan Registry, Anti-Virus, and Firewall.
(There may be some other things on *your* box that NEED to be in SysTray,
but that is rare.)
