I run sygate personal firewall with the stealth browsing option active. windows update can't tell that I'm using IE6 and doesn't seem to bother asking the OS what it actually is and hence says 'you're not windows because I'm not sure that you *are* windows' end of story. when I disabled stealth browsing everything worked again!
