This has always worked for me...and I had the same problem as you before. (The suggestions submitted by others are fine too. This is just another choice.) View your running programs by using Ctrl/Alt/Del. Highlight and "End Task" everything except Explorer & Systray. Then just go and use your defrag tool. It'll work. If you haven't defragged in a long time it will take a while. The more often you defrag the quicker it is to finish. Bob
