I having messing around with my computer trying to rid it of malware and/or virus
and now I am stuck with a lousy startup screen, which needs a return key strike to
open windows 98. The script on the lousy startup screen is:
“Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run windows or a windows application.
The Windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file, but the device
file no longer exists. If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the
associated application using its uninstall or setup program.
If you still want to use the application associated with this device file, try reinstalling
that application to replace the missing file.
smtcpmon.vxd.
Press a key to continue.”
I have tried various solutions offered on the net with no success. I tried to use
System File Checker method to try to extract the missing file from the Windows 98
CD-Rom. However, the file “smtcpmon.vxd” could not be found. In fact this file could
not be found anywhere on surfing the net.
Associated with this problem is the disabling of the shortcut icon for Canon ZoomBrowser
because its target entry line is blank out. Repeated reinstallation of the canon
digital camera solution disk failed at the point of installation for ZoomBrowser
EX. Luckily I could launch the ZoomBrowser by creating another shortcut, which is
only represented by a plain icon.
I would really appreciate help and advice.
