Use CCLeaner to clean up the drive first of all and then run scandisk in safe mode.
If you are still using the original '98 defrag it will take forever, so download
newdefrag.zip and replace your defrag.exe with the defrag.exe from ME which will
run 10 times faster and do a much better job.
How much free-space is there in the drive? You need a good 15% free-space for defrag
to run properly.
You can also try...DISKEEPER LITE
...if you have enough room for the 12 MB install.
If your current drive runs at 5,400 rev/min with a 2 MB buffer, fitting a 7,200 rev/min
drive with an 8MB drive buffer will speed up defrag too. It should be four times
faster than an ME defrag on a drive with a 2 MB buffer.
