Cannot open .xls attachment

Having difficulty opening an .xls attachment on an e-mail. I have M/S Works Suite 2000 which uses Notepad to open .xls documents. The attachment opens but it appears as a series of strange symbols (not letters); looks like Egyptian hieroglyphics. I have been receiving this e-mail (with .xls attachment) twice monthly for the last 4 years and never had a problem. No changes have been made to my computer, HOWEVER, I just switched my ISP (from AT&T Worldnet to EarthLink). Any help would be greatly appreciated.
