Thks vm for all the responses.
Additional info: I switched ISPs last month. For a brief period I had overlapping
service. When the e-mail was sent through AT&T Worldnet Web Mail I could read the
attachment without a problem. When the very same e-mail was sent through EarthLink
Web Mail I got the hieroglyphics. I don't have Excel installed on my computer. Does
this mean that if you use AT&T Worldnet as your ISP you don't require an Excel viewer
to read .xls attachments while if you use EarthLink as your ISP you must have an
installed Excel viewer to read any .xls attachments?
The following is the procedure I have used for the past four years to open the .xls
attachments in question:
1) Right click the e-mail .xls attachment
2) Save to "MY DOCUMENTS"
3) Right click and scan with Norton for viruses
4) Right click and then right click again on "Quick View" (if I try to right click
or left click on "Open" the following
message box always pops up: "This file is too large for NotePad. Would you like to
use WordPad to read this file?" If I say "yes" the hieroglyphics appear again.)
I will download an Excel viewer to see if that solves the problem but it seems strange
that I've never required Excel before. Could it possibly be due to the way EarthLink
configures its Web Mail?
